In sodden conditions at FMG Stadium, the Turbos showed more enterprise with ball in hand but it was the boot of Ihaia West with six penalties that proved the difference. West punished any ill-discipline by landing seven out of eight shots while the Turbos kickers Otere Black and Sam Malcolm could only combine for two from seven.

Manawatu dominated the first half to go up 11-3 before Hawke’s Bay worked their way back into the contest through the boot of West and a well-controlled forward effort in the wet.

Turbos hooker Travis Taylor grabbed a second try from a forward drive to tie up the score 16-16 before a well taken intercept try from Robbie Freuan and more accurate goal kicking from West closed out the game for Hawke’s Bay.

Despite the win, Hawke’s Bay are still anchored to the base of the Premiership ladder on 14 points and will need to win their final two matches to have any chance of avoiding relegation. Manawatu will be disappointed to not come away with a bonus point and have slipped to fourth on the ladder behind North Harbour.

Manawatu 21 (Travis Taylor 2, Tim Cadwallader tries, Otere Black 2 pen) Hawke’s Bay 30 (Robbie Fruean, Mark Abbott tries, Ihaia West 6 pen, con)
HT: 11-3
