Canterbury Confirm 2017 Ranfurly Shield Challenges

Wanganui will travel to Christchurch and play at AMI Stadium on Wednesday 21 June, while the Shield will go on the road for a challenge on Friday 4 August from Mid-Canterbury which will be played at the Ashburton Showgrounds.
Canterbury CEO Hamish Riach confirmed that several challenges were received from Mitre 10 Championship and Heartland unions and in the end the decision to play Wanganui and Mid-Canterbury was in keeping with the spirit that comes with the Log o’Wood. Wanganui won the Meads Cup, so will be a very strong challenge for the Red & Blacks, while Mid-Canterbury had a strong showing in the Lochore Cup losing in the semi-final to Noth Otago.
New Canterbury Coach Glenn Delaney is looking forward to his first assignment as Head Coach and expects both challengers to be a real test as part of his pre-season programme.
“Canterbury had a wonderful season this year, so I’m looking forward to assembling my squad for our 2017 campaign, and planning our defences against both Wanganui and Mid-Canterbury. The Ranfurly Shield brings something really special for both teams who challenge or defend, so I’m expecting a couple of very tough games”
Ticketing information for the Cantebury versus Wanganui challenge at AMI Stadium will be provided in the New Year.
Canterbury v Wanganui, Wednesday 21 June at AMI Stadium
Mid-Canterbury v Canterbury, Friday 4 August at the Ashburton Showgrounds
Both matches wil be afternoon games, with kick-off times to be confirmed
